A holiday tale from the New York Times bestselling author of the Walt Longmire mystery series, the inspiration for A&E' s hit show Longmire " It' s a question of what you have to do, what you have to live with if you don' t." Sheriff Walt Longmire is reading A Christmas Carol in his office on December 24th when he' s interrupted by the ghost of Christmas past: a young woman with a hairline scar across her forehead and more than a few questions about Walt' s predecessor, Lucian Connally. Walt doesn' t recognize the mystery woman, but she seems to know him and claims to have something she must return to Connally. With his daughter, Cady, and his undersheriff Vic Moretti in Philadelphia for the holidays, Walt is at loose ends, and despite the woman' s reticence to reveal her identity, he agrees to help her. At the Durant Home for Assisted Living Lucian Connally is several tumblers into his Pappy Van Winkle' s and swears he' s never clapped eyes on the woman before. Disappointed, she whispers " Steamboat" and begins a story that takes them all back to Christmas Eve 1988, when three people died in a terrible crash and a young girl had the slimmest chance of survival . . . back to a record- breaking blizzard, to Walt' s first year as sheriff, with a young daughter at home and a wife praying for his safety . . . back to a whiskey-soaked World War II vet ready to fly a decommissioned plane and risk it all to save a life. Back to the Spirit of Steamboat.

George Guidall's narration is impeccable in this Walt Longmire novella, which flashes back to Christmas Eve 1988. A critically burned child needs a life flight from Wyoming to Denver, but a terrible snowstorm has made the trip impossible. Guidall is perfect as Longmire, the newly elected sheriff who is determined to save the girl. Guidall's voice is especially fitting for the cantankerous retired sheriff, Lucian Connally, who decides to fly the girl and crew on a dilapidated bomber, called Steamboat, which he flew during WWII. Guidall renders Connally as an irritating, drunk, yet likable and humorous character. Guidall's pacing brings out the intense excitement as the crew encounters one disaster after another during the harrowing and miraculous flight. M.M.G. Bestseller Johnson (A Serpent’s Tooth) delivers a nail-biter with this seasonal Walt Longmire novella. On a snowy Christmas Eve, while reading A Christmas Carol, the Wyoming sheriff receives an unexpected visitor: a part-Japanese young woman who says she needs to see Walt’s predecessor as sheriff, Lucian Connally, a WWII vet who flew in the Doolittle raid on Tokyo in 1942 and is now in a rest home. Flashback to December 24, 1988. A girl seriously injured in a traffic accident has to get to Denver fast for treatment, but a blizzard makes flying her there hazardous. Furthermore, the only plane available is an antique B-25, named Steamboat after the bucking bronco on Wyoming’s license plate, and the only pilot who can fly Steamboat is Lucian. Soon, the two lawmen, their team, and the patient are aloft, fighting the weather and a host of mechanical problems. While the outcome is never in doubt, the woman’s meeting with Lucian in the present day holds more than one surprise. 5-city author tour. Agent: Gail Hochman, Brandt & Hochman Literary Agents.
